When to call a crisis line
You don't have to be suicidal to call a crisis line. You don't have to be at rock bottom. You call when you're struggling and don't know what to do next. You call when the craving is overwhelming and you don't have anyone else. You call when you feel alone at 2am and the silence is getting dangerous. That's what these lines are for.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline was specifically expanded in 2022 to cover substance use crises as well as suicidal ideation. If you're struggling with addiction and need to talk to someone right now, 988 is appropriate. SAMHSA's National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is staffed 24/7 with specialists who can also refer you to local treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based organisations.
What happens when you call
Most people hesitate to call crisis lines because they don't know what to expect. Here's what typically happens: you'll hear a brief recorded message, then be connected to a live crisis counsellor, usually within a few minutes. The counsellor will ask what's going on. You can say as much or as little as you want. They won't judge you. They won't automatically send police to your location unless there is an immediate threat to life and you've specifically requested help. The call is confidential. You can hang up whenever you want.
For text-based support, text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). If you prefer to chat online, the 988 website offers a chat option. The Veterans Crisis Line has a dedicated chat at veteranscrisisline.net.
Keep these numbers accessible
The worst time to search for a crisis number is during an actual crisis. Bookmark this page. Put 988 and your sponsor's number in your phone contacts right now, not later. Include the crisis line number in your Relapse Prevention Plan. Add the SAMHSA number to the crisis section of your plan.
If you've come to this page because you're struggling right now, please scroll back up and call or text one of the numbers at the top of this page. You can finish reading later. The call matters more than anything else on this page.
